		2.88 FLOPPY DISK INSTALLATION NOTES

SECTION 1 - INTRODUCTION

IMPORTANT NOTICE!

2.88 Floppy support is NOT available on the CSC FastCache 32 Controller.
The FC64 products use a different floppy controller chip to support
	the 2.88 Meg floppies.

FASTCACHE 64 HARDWARE INSTALLATION

The 2.88 floppy drive is always connected to second floppy
    connector labeled "EXTENDED FLOPPY 3&4".

FASTCACHE 64 SOFTWARE SETUP

To use 2.88M floppies, you must first enable this option by
    running FCSETUP.

    Set Floppy 3 & 4 to Enable
Set Floppy 3 Type to 2.88M

After saving these settings with <F10>, the user must reboot to enable
    the extended floppies.

COMPATIBILITY WITH 2.88 FLOPPY DISK DRIVES

There are 2 standards for 2.88 floppy disk drives. Before IBM,
a 2.88M drive standard was defined by Toshiba and Teac. The ED (2.88)
mode was selected by pins 2 and 6 on the 34 pin interface. However when
IBM introduced their 2.88, they selected different polarity on these two
signals. Teac introduced a new version of their disk drive to support
IBMs standard. CSC's Flashcache64 and Fastcache64 were designed to work
with either floppy, in fact the FC64 does not even use pins 2 and 6 to
select density. The Flashcache64 & Fastcache64 use a feature that all
2.88 floppy disk drive support, auto disk type detection. Special
"holes" in the diskette tell the drive if a 720K, 1.44M or 2.88M floppy
is selected. The floppy drive automatically adjusts its operating mode
to this floppy. CSC FC64 BIOS automatically senses the type of floppy
inserted and tells the system what type of floppy is available.

FORMATTING A 2.88M FLOPPY.

With DOS 5.0 use the following command to format floppies in your
    2.88M drive.

    FORMAT D: /f:2.88 - Format 2.88M floppy disk in 2.88M drive D:

    FORMAT D: /f:1.44 - Format 1.44M floppy disk in 2.88M drive D:

    FORMAT D: /f:720 - Format 720K floppy disk in 2.88M drive D:

SECTION 2 - QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Can I install my 2.88 floppy disk as drive A: or B:?

No, current Motherboard BIOS's do not support 2.88M as primary
floppies. Therefore, the FlashCache64 supports 2.88M as
    extended floppies.

Can I format and use 1.44M floppy diskettes as 2.88M?

Don't even try, the new 2.88 media is a special purpose Barium Ferrite
material. The data on this new media is recorded in a perpendicular
mode (vertically). This allows twice the amount of data to be stored
with the same track density of a 1.44 floppy.

Where can I get the 2.88 media, and what do I ask for?

Ask for 2.88 "ED" media such as:

Maxell MF2-ED Extra-High Density 3.5 inch Floppy Disk
Kao MF2ED 3.5" Micro Diskette with 4 MB Capacity
    3M DS,ED 3.5" Extra High Density Diskettes
    Dysan MF2ED 3.5" 4MB Flexible Disks
Toshiba PMF-2ED 4MB Micro Floppy Disk

Will my 2.88M drive always be at drive D:?

No, The logical drive assignment will vary depending on the
configuration of your system. If you only have a single logical hard
drive at drive C:, your 2.88M floppy will be located at drive D:.
If you have more than one logical hard drive, your 2.88 Floppy will
appear at the drive letter immediatly following your last hard drive.

Will my 2.88 floppy work with MSDOS 3.3, MSDOS 4.01, or DRDOS 6.0?

No, use MSDOS 5.0 or above for operation with 2.88M floppies.

Can I boot from a 2.88M floppy drive?

Most systems only allow booting from drives A: and the first
hard disk. Booting from a 2.88 floppy drive setup as drive
    D: is not supported.

SECTION 2 - QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS - Continued.

Can I install software from my 2.88 extended floppy drive?

Most install programs allow selection of any drive for a source
drive. However there are some install programs that only allow
software to be installed from drive A: or drive B:.
On way around this restriction, may be by using the DOS assign
    command.

For Example: (assuming D: is a 2.88 Meg floppy drive)

assign A: D: - Tells dos to use the A: drive as if it were the D:
drive. Typing "dir A:" would result in a directory
                     of physical the D: drive.
(See the DOS Reference Manual for more information)

Note: Some programs may circumvent this technique.

If all else fails, contact technical support for the particular
    software package.

What type of floppy cable should I use for installing my 2.88M floppy?

Your FlashCache64 came with two floppy cables. If you would like
to use another cable, simply use a standard PC floppy cable with
the twist between the first and second drive.

Can I use my 2.88 drive D: with backup programs such as FASTBACK?

Some backup programs only support drive A and B as floppy backup devices.
Be sure to check with your software vendor to see if drives other than
A or B are supported. Late versions of FASTBACK and CENTRAL POINT BACKUP
support 2.88 Meg floppies as extended drives.

Can I use install my tape backup drive into an extended floppy drive port?

The FC64 will perform very well in this configuration if the software
used for backup supports it. Be sure that the Floppy Type for this drive
is set to "None" in fcsetup.

It should also be noted that some newer tape drives support a higher
(1M bit/sec) transfer rate. Therefore tape backups may actually
perform twice as fast if the drive is plugged into the extended
floppy port than if they were plugged into the primary (A & B) port.
